04 Make folders and files

4 / 15

Goal

Create projects/blog/posts/hello.md (an empty file), making any folders you need.

mkdir makes a folder. Asked to make a/b/c when a doesn't exist yet, it refuses — unless you add -p, which creates every missing folder along the way (and doesn't complain if they already exist).

touch creates an empty file. (Its real job is updating a file's timestamp; creating one is a side effect everyone uses.)

Try it

Set up a folder for a blog, with a first post in it. Try plain mkdir projects/blog/posts first to see the error.

Go to the terminal

Hint

mkdir -p projects/blog/posts makes every missing folder in one go. Then touch projects/blog/posts/hello.md.

Show a solution

mkdir -p projects/blog/posts
touch projects/blog/posts/hello.md

This interactive environment needs JavaScript. Everything you need to read is on this page, and the solution works the same way for real.
