08 Count lines, words and bytes

8 / 15

Goal

How many lines are in logs/access.log? Run a command that prints the answer.

wc (word count) prints three numbers for a file: lines, words and bytes. -l asks for lines only, -w for words, -c for bytes.

Counting lines is surprisingly useful: lines in a log are events, lines in a CSV are records, lines of grep output are matches.

Try it

How much traffic is in the access log?

Hint

wc -l logs/access.log counts lines.
